BULAWAYO giants, Highlanders FC consolidated the top spot on the Castle Larger Premier Soccer League table after beating Manica Diamonds one-nil at Barbourfields stadium this Sunday.
Highlanders collected maximum points through a set piece which was finished off by dependable defender Peter Mudhuwa.
The hosts dominated the first half, but the visitors came to a better side in the second half.
The goal which made the difference was dedicated to Godfrey Makaruse who got injured and is likely to be out for some time.
Highlanders head coach Baltermer Brito was satisfied with the win.
“Yes, we won with a good performance because we were playing a good team. We could have changed this victory by the presence of Godfrey Makaruse,” said Brito.
Manica Diamonds coach Jairos Tapera lamented the absence of Fortune Binzi but applauded his charges for a spirited fight.
He said, “We knew Highlanders were going to score from a set piece. It was their day but credit to my boys for a disciplined second-half fight. In the second half, we saw they were tiring up thus why we introduced these young stars. I am proud of my boys, and we are going to fight.”
Makaruse’s substitute Archford Faira was equally up to the task, an indication of Bosso’s depth in defence.
In other matches played this Sunday, Hwange and FC Platinum played out to a goalless draw at the Colliery, Sheasham and Black Rhinos also drew nil-all at Bata stadium, while ZPC Kariba edged Simba Bhora 2-1 at Baobab stadium.
