The Zimbabwe taekwondo association has partnered with private players in talent identification as part of growing the sport.
Marondera-based private school, Wise Owl, has come up with developmental initiatives in the sport in which it has partnered with the Zimbabwe Taekwondo Association to expose players to the sport at a tender age.
The school organised an invitational tournament attended by schools and clubs from Harare, Chivhu, Marondera and Chitungwiza.
“We saw it fit as a school to host this tournament as part of identifying talent at the grassroots level as this province of Mashonaland East has a lot of talent,” noted Wise Owl sports director Elias Magocha.
President of the Zimbabwe Taekwondo Association, Bensen Zvizvai noted, “As an association, we really appreciate such efforts by local schools as they help us in developing and identifying talent at the grassroots as we prepare for major international tournaments. The athletes say the tournament is important as it helps in their development.”
A player, Natalie Mazorodze said the tournament has helped her a lot as she now has better skills which she did not have before.
Another player, Darlington Simango said, “Having represented Zimbabwe in the Zone 6 National Youth Games, such events are very important to us athletes as they expose us to better skills as we seek to be professional.”
“I have come all the way from Chivhu to participate in the tournament which I believe is the way to go as we seek to represent Zimbabwe at the international level,” noted Egranohimiyo Muvuti.
Athletes who excelled at the event were rewarded with medals and individual trophies
