Battle of Zim match postponed

THE much-anticipated Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders and Dynamos, which was slated for Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday has been postponed to pave way for the clash of the two giants in the Independence trophy next Tuesday.

Bosso are the current holders of the Uhuru Cup after beating DeMbare one-nil at Barbourfields Stadium last year, courtesy of a Stanley Ngala header.

The match will surely lighten up the small town of Mt Darwin as both sets of fans are known for their enthusiasm and colour.

The latest development means that the clash between CAPS United and FC Platinum set for the National Sports Stadium on Sunday will have undivided attention as the top two teams on the log meet.

Defending champions FC Platinum and giants CAPS United share a rich history and their latest meeting promises to be no different.

FC Platinum are coached by Zimbabwe football legend Norman Mapeza, a man who was in the same dugout with Charles Mhlauri in the all-conquering CAPS United side of 2004.

On the other hand, the Green Machine is coached by its most decorated son, Lloyd Chitembwe who has won the league as a player and coach.

What is even more interesting is that Chitembwe and Mapeza grew up in the same neighbourhood in Chitungwiza and played for Darryn Tornadoes.

CAPS United stopped FC Platinum from winning their first league title in 2016, with the Zvishavane-based side having gone into the last day of the final weekend leading by two points.

FC Platinum beat Tsholotsho 3-nil on a Saturday to take a two-point lead and hoped for CAPS United to drop points at Ascot stadium against Chapungu the following day.

However, Simba Nhivi scored the solitary goal and Makepekepe held on for victory and ultimately claim the title much to FC Platinum’s disappointment.

The Platinum Miners then wrestled away the league from CAPS United in 2017 and since then, they haven’t been dethroned.

Along the way, they have had some good battles and CAPS United fans will remember how FC Platinum snatched the league away from Makepekepe after beating the Green Machine on the last day of the season at the National Sports Stadium in 2019.
