Local football fans are excited about the renovations taking place at the ceremonial home of local football, Rufaro Stadium, which is expected to see Premier Soccer League action returning to Mbare once the project is complete.
The stadium has not been hosting football matches since 2019 after it was declared unfit to host top flight league matches.
What followed was disaster after disaster as the Harare City Council’s deal with Sakunda Holdings collapsed and with that hopes to renovate the stadium faded.
However, a partnership between City Parking and the local authority has revived hopes of football action returning to the Mbare venue.
The development has brought smiles to football fans and the Mbare community who can’t wait to watch top flight football action at Rufaro.
A fan told the ZBC News, “As fans, we are very happy that football will return to Mbare with the progress happening at Rufaro. It has been long since football was no longer played this side so we are very happy.”
Another said, “We are delighted with the development because this will also promote renovations in infrastructure, security and street parking so we really support the improvement.”
The stadium was supposed to be renovated by Sakunda Holdings after a long term lease agreement with the City Council, but Fuel Company withdrew from the project accusing the local authority of failing to meet their end of the deal.
