Regional Youth Games start

It was a slow start for Team Zimbabwe at the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth games in Malawi this Tuesday after failing to collect any medals on day one.

Langton Machekanyanga fell just short of a medal after he finished fourth in the Taekwondo under 49 kg competition.

Machekanyanga was the only Zimbabwean in action on the first day of the regional games, where Zimbabwe is targeting at least 50 gold medals.

Meanwhile, the National Under 16 basketball teams have intensified preparations ahead of the 3 by 3 (3X3) competitions this Thursday.

However, the bigger goal for the basketball teams is to qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket championships set for next year.

“We are ready. Since these games are qualifiers we are going to do all we can to make sure that we get there and compete against the continental heavyweights next year,” said the boys Basketball coach, Tapiwa Mungunyana.

“COVID-19 has sort of been an equaliser, we all didn’t train and our kids haven’t had much game time so that can work well for all of us and we hope to make it. We have a good team,” said the Basketball team manager, Zanele Nzima

Elsewhere, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Nancy Saungweme visited Team Zimbabwe at the Game’s village and handed over some necessities.
