Smart City master plans for Harare Province

By John Nhandara

HARARE Metropolitan Province is in the process of drafting master plans for local authorities that conform to the government’s Smart Cities Concept.

The master plans will ensure that industrial, commercial and residential areas feed into the Second Republic’s Smart Cities Concept.

Harare Metropolitan Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Tafadzwa Muguti says the existing master plans being used by local authorities are now outdated.

“We want to have an approach where we develop our city in line with the smart cities concept and have an environment that is not congested. The government is seized with the matter. We are taking a whole government approach. We launched a master plan for Chitungwiza and we are doing this for other local authorities because the master plans, they are using are now outdated,” he said.

Mr Muguti also condemned the violent clashes that were recently witnessed in Mbare’s Mupedzanhamo area, saying the government is seized with providing adequate and proper trading spaces for informal traders.

“Space barons had taken over Mbare Musika and Mupedzanhamo. We did not tolerate space barons controlling local authority or government spaces. As the government, we have statutes to deal with these. We will not tolerate such behaviour and as we speak, arrests are being made. We are also working on putting proper facilities so that Mupedzanhamo can be reopened,” he added.

Mr Muguti’s comments come after one person died while vending stalls were destroyed at Mupedzanhamo informal traders’ market in Mbare as the area was turned into a war zone on Monday.

Twenty people have since been arrested in connection with the skirmishes.
