ORGANISERS of Kudakwashe Chiwandire’s World Boxing Council title defence against Mexican Zulina Munoz scheduled for Harare this Saturday have been exposed for poor planning, with no one taking responsibility of the mess which could cost the Zimbabwean boxer her title.
Time is running out for Chiwandire to defend her World Boxing Council title amid accusations and counter accusations between the promoters and the local boxing control body.
Chiwandire has been in camp for the past three months, but that could all go down the drain as her promoters have failed to bring in the challenger.
The fight is being promoted by Delta Force Boxing Academy, which is also in charge of all logistical arrangements, but indications are that Munoz will not be in Harare on Saturday.
Delta Force Boxing Academy Director Clyde Musonda, who is also Kuda Chiwandire’s trainer and manager, directed all questions to the Zimbabwe Boxing and Wrestling Control Board.
However, the board says its role is to regulate the sport and accused Delta Force of dishonesty.
“There is no clarity at this point because there is critical information we have requested from Mr Musonda, but we haven’t received that, so I cannot give a definitive answer because Mr Musonda is the one who is in charge of all logistical arrangements and we stand guided by him. He is the promoter and they are the ones who came up with a date for the fight. There is also quite a number of information we have requested from him, but we haven’t received and that information is the one that will inform the level of intervention we can give,” said Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board CEO, Lawrence Zimbudzana.
As accusations are being thrown in all directions, the promoters could also be throwing away Chiwandire’s title.
Chiwandire has already missed the stipulated time frame for the mandatory defence of her title and her fate now lies in the hands of the WBC adjudications chamber.
There could be more consequences for Chiwandire as she will be forced to start all over again and challenge for the title.
