Lady Chevrons reach semis

Zimbabwe is through to the semi-finals of the International Cricket Council Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers after beating Thailand and the other group B result going their way.

The ladies are two matches away from securing their place at the grand stage.

The Lady Chevrons will play their last group matches this Wednesday for placement purposes after they managed to secure four points from their first two matches.

Thailand and Papua New Guinea have two points apiece, but since they are playing against each other, it means only one team will be able to get to four points.

A victory in tomorrow’s encounter against the hosts United Arab Emirates will see the Lady Chevrons go through to the semi-finals as group winners.

With the form the team is in, the likelihood is that they will top the group and play a team that finishes second in group A in the all-important last four stage.

The Lady Chevrons just need to secure a victory in the semi-finals to be guaranteed a place at next year’s World Cup as only two teams are set to join eight other nations that have already qualified for the ten-team tournament.

Gary Brent, the team’s coach, is pleased with their mental strength.

“The weather here is 38 degrees plus all the time and the girls have been doing fantastic. It’s not just about skill, but the girls have also worked hard on their mental attitude and there are things you can teach as a coach, but some of them it’s down to the players and I am really happy,” he said.

Zimbabwe will play the UAE this Wednesday evening as Papua New Guinea will be playing at the same time.

In group A Bangladesh has already qualified for the semis while it’s a winner take all between Scotland and Ireland in the other encounter with the victors set to qualify for the last four as they have the same number of points.
