FC Platinum cruise as Dynamos drop points

By Mthokozisi Dube

Defending champions FC Platinum confirmed their title credentials after moving eight points clear at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table following another fruitful weekend while second placed Dynamos faltered.

Going into Week 27, focus was on the Whawha and FC Platinum match as most giants have failed to withstand the heat at Ascot Stadium in Gweru.

The match was bound to be a showdown as Whawha, who are staring relegation, were plotting a David victory over Goliath but it was not to be, as the defending champions rose to the occasion and piled more misery on the correctional services side after a 2-1 victory.

With FC Platinum registering a win, Dynamos were expected to keep their chase alive with a win over Black Rhinos, but the army side lived up to their tag as King makers as they held Dembare to a one-all draw.

Black Rhinos matches have been decisive in the title race after holding FC Platinum, beating Chicken Inn and this time forcing a draw against Dynamos.

The relegation matrix took another interesting twist as two relegation candidates Harare City and ZPC Kariba played out to a goal-less draw.

Bulawayo City sunk into the murky waters of relegation after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of army side Cranborne Bullets at Barbourfields stadium.

CAPS United remained part of the relegation matrix after being held to a goalless draw by equally troubled Tenax.

Meanwhile, attention shifts to Chibuku Supper Cup action with the focus on the quarter-finals this weekend.

On Saturday, Herentals play Manica Diamonds at the National Sports Stadium, while on Sunday Black Rhinos face Chicken Inn who are expected to set up a temporary base in the capital after playing Manica Diamonds in a Tuesday league fixture.

A mouth-watering tie is set for the National Sports Stadium on Sunday when giants Dynamos host defending champions FC Platinum while the fixture between Bulawayo Chiefs and Highlanders set for Barbourfields stadium concludes Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals.
