Zimbabwe braces for Africa Chess Championships

By Anashe Murombedzi

TOP Zimbabwe Chess player Zhemba Jemusse is confident of doing well at the Africa Championships slated for Nigeria next week.

After winning the Minerva Zimbabwe Open in April, Zhemba Jemusse automatically qualified for the Africa Individual Chess championships set for Nigeria from the 16th to the 25th of this month.

The Namibia-based Chess star also won the 2023 Olympiad which took place in Chennai, India, recently, boosting his chances at the continental showpiece.

The 21-year old is upbeat he will not return empty-handed.

“I once participated in the Africa Individual Chess championships in Zambia where I won the candidate master title. I scored half of the total games at that time and considering I was young and not that strong and still managed to win a title, my confidence was boosted. This upcoming tournament is one of the toughest in Africa whereby all African countries will be participating. I can only hope for the best.

Jemusse will be joined by Raffiloe Madondo, the reigning champion in the women’s pool.

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation is sending only two individuals out of ten due to logistical challenges.
