PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa says the Second Republic is promoting inclusivity, equality and professionalism, regardless of one’s abilities.
He was speaking when he honoured the Special Olympics Team Zimbabwe at State House in Harare this Tuesday.
Team Zimbabwe participated at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi and bagged 15 medals – six gold, three silver and three bronze – and President Emmerson Mnangagwa pledged to host the team.
The event was however deferred because of COVID-19.
True to his word, the President hosted the delegation this Tuesday and spoke on the Second Republic’s thrust towards sport.
“I congratulate you for your outstanding performance which saw you bring home medals and trophies. The success of the Zimbabwe Special Olympics team gives impetus to fostering a high performance sporting ecosystem that is characterised by inclusion, equality and professionalism.
“This is important as sport by its nature, is an industry that joins together everyone, regardless of circumstances, background, gender, creed and social status.
“My government is committed to fostering inclusion through the power and joy of sport. In line of our quest to leave no one and no place behind, Special Olympiads can count on my administration to support athletes with regards what they can do as opposed to what they cannot do,” said the President.
The President, who played golf with the Special Olympics team in Abu Dhabi when he made a surprise visit at the world games, also highlighted how the Second Republic is ready to support all excelling citizens.
“Under the Second Republic, disability will never be a hindrance to any of our citizenry from accessing, benefiting and enjoying all forms of social and economic opportunities. Hence, children and adults with disabilities must be facilitated and supported to continue excelling in life and across various endeavours.
“Stigma and discrimination that inhibit children and youth and our societies in general from participating in the mainstream economy and nation building have no place in our country.”
President Mnangagwa was presented with gifts by the Special Olympics Africa for his tremendous support to the intellectual disability cause.
