Battle of the Cities in limbo

By Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

The blockbuster Battle of the Cities continues to be in doubt after Caps United players once again failed to train this Friday ahead of their match against Highlanders set for Barbourfields Stadium this Sunday.

Caps United are scheduled to play Highlanders this Sunday but the players have refused to train the entire week over unpaid dues.

The players were last paid in May and are demanding their salaries and bonuses before they return to work.

Contacted for comment, Caps United president Farai Jere promised to get back to the ZBC News crew, but was unavailable until broadcast time.

The matter has also caught the attention of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ), an organisation that deals with the welfare of players and coaches and they have written to the club asking them to meet their obligations within 10 days or face termination of contracts.

The current impasse between the club and the players leaves the match at Barbourfields in doubt with the players’ adamant that they will not turn up until they are paid.

However, Castle Lager Premier Soccer League action starts this Saturday with another blockbuster encounter as Ngezi Platinum Stars host FC Platinum at Baobab Stadium looking to get back to winning ways.

Second-placed Dynamos make the trip to Kariba for a date against ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga Stadium, while Chicken Inn travel to Rusape to collide with Black Rhinos at Vhengere Stadium.
DeMbare will miss the services of Shadreck Nyahwa and Alex Orotomal who are nursing injuries.

Elsewhere, struggling Harare City host unpredictable Bulawayo Chiefs at the National Sports Stadium, relegation threatened Bulawayo City take on Yadah at Barbourfields Stadium.

Equally struggling Whawha have a date with Triangle at Ascot Stadium in Gweru.

On Sunday, Manica Diamonds welcomes Cranborne Bullets to Vhengere Stadium, while Herentals face troubled Tenax at the National Sports Stadium.
