THE Stragglers Junior Cricket Week is back after a two-year absence, with over 500 children from various primary schools converging at Hartman House School in Harare.
The junior development programme, which started in 1966, has produced some of the best cricketers the country has ever known, but had taken a break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Current national team captain Craig Ervine, former captain and now Director of Cricket Hamilton Masakadza, and former national team players Elton Chigumbura and PJ Moor are some of the products of Stragglers Junior Cricket development.
“We are happy to be back. The Stragglers Cricket week sees young cricket enthusiasts learn the ropes under the tutelage of some of the country’s best cricket brains,” said Winn Ives, chairperson of Stragglers Cricket.
Chevrons players Sikander Raza and Brad Evans took the children through a session before they departed for Australia with the national team.
Stanbic Bank has renewed its partnership with the tournament for the next three years.
“We are happy to contribute to the development of Zimbabwe Cricket and we can strongly claim that we have taken a part in shaping cricket because we have been supporting this initiative for 16 years and we renewed our partnership again,” said Simba Mhuriro, Stanbic Bank none executive director.
During the tournament, all the children have a chance to bat, bowl and field as the coaches horn the skills of the youngsters.
