THE Women Super League resumed at the weekend with log leaders Herentals Queens continuing from where they left off before the mid-season break after thumping Borrow Jets 3-1 at Hillside Centre in Bulawayo.
Goals from Praynence Zvawanda, Tabeth Mutinhiri and Melody Mafuruse saw Herentals reaching the 40-point mark from 14 games with 13 wins and a draw.
Elsewhere, Harare City Queens and Black Mambas shared the spoils after a one-all draw at Rufaro Stadium, while in a Mutare Derby Faith Drive Academy edged Mutare City Rovers 3-2 at Nyamauru High School.
Herentals are at the top of the log with 40 points, followed by defending champions Black Rhinos Queens with 36 points having played a game less.
Chapungu are third on 33 points with Correctional Queens completing the top four with 25 points.
Meanwhile, lack of corporate support has been identified as an obstacle to the development of women’s football in the country as most teams are struggling to fulfil fixtures.
“Lack of support and marketing from our leadership is our biggest undoing. Maybe we are not selling the game the right way. I think if we were to sell it the right way, we would attract support. For instance today you saw they were no supporting officials from the bench.
“These people need to be paid, substitutes cannot spend the whole game standing. But financially we have challenges. We need to put our heads together or maybe start projects to finance our activities,” said Thembelani Dliwayo, Borrow Jets FC director.
Stakeholders are proposing area zones to minimise costs associated with travelling expenses.
“Running a team is no mean task without corporate support. We would propose to relook the established zones as this will reduce the burden of mobilising resources,” said Lee Mangena, Street Set FC director.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is on a drive to promote women’s football after making it mandatory for all men’s teams participating in the Champions League to have women’s teams after launching a women’s Champions League.
