GOVERNMENT has commended the private sector’s role in developing the tourism industry towards attaining the US$5 billion value chain target as the sector recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tourism industry is steadily recovering from the devastating impact of COVID-19 induced global lockdowns and tourism and hospitality players are implementing strategies so as to revert to pre pandemic levels.
Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Minister, Honorable Mangaliso Ndlovu, reiterated that modernising local tourism infrastructure is one of the key ways to fast-track the recovery process.
He said this when he recently toured one of Zimbabwe’s prominent hotel chains in Harare which upgraded its facilities to the tune of US$2 million.
“The private sector is an integral part to the economy and the tourism industry has benefited hefty from its participation in building the economy. Modernizing key hotel facilities resonates with the goal to match our own industry to global standards especially as the industry recuperate from the ravages of the Covid 19 pandemic,” he said.
Cresta Group of Companies Country Director, Ms Chipo Mandela emphasised the need to match Zimbabwe’s hospitality package with top notch international standards.
“The tourism industry is fast evolving and as a company we cannot rest on our laurels but to continuously upgrade our hotels which is key to attracting more international tourists,” she said.
Government has set a tourism industry value chain target of US$ 5 million by 2023.
