Zim Davis Cup set for Algeria tour

THE Zimbabwe Davis Cup team are set to return to the court for a turnaround of fortunes ahead of the Africa Cup group 3 scheduled to take place in Algeria next month.

Zimbabwe Davis Cup team are now regrouping for a change of fortunes from relegation to elevation back to the world group come this August, from August 10 to August 13.

Zimbabwe were routed to the Africa group 3 after failing in the World group ii playoffs culminating to a defeat to El Salvador in March.

The Davis Cup team will feel the new system of new skipper Freeman Nyamunokora who took over from Gwinyai Tongoona and is optimistic about burying the past to lead the team to qualifiers.

“In a game of tennis it’s a sport where you get used to losing a lot when playing and at the end, there’s always one winner it was a tough loss but with the guys, we have been in touch and they have remained positive and they are ready to move on and bury the past to move forward and hopefully we will definitely qualify,” said Gwinyai Tongoona, Zimbabwe Davis Cup team captain.

Nyamunokora will lead a five-member delegation comprising of the European-based Lock boys Benjamin and Courtney, Thabo Ncube, Methluli Sibanda and the coming in of a junior player Tinaye Badza who have been in action in their respective clubs.

Zimbabwe will compete among hosts Algeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Namibia, Morocco, Benin, Mozambique and Kenya.

Zimbabwe will take on Algeria as they hope to be part of the three nations that will battle for a place in the World group 3 while two nations will be relegated to the Africa Cup group 4.
