Manondo tops the goal scorers’ charts

By Anashe Murombedzi

The Premier Soccer League goal scorers’ chart is still far from convincing. With 21 games played so far and 13 games to go, the 20 goal-mark could be out of reach for the 2022 golden boot winner, Caps United striker William Manondo.

Manondo is leading the goal scorers’ chart with 12 goals, which translates to a return rate averaging a goal in every two games.

Brian Muza of Chicken Inn is second with 10 goals followed by Nyasha Chintuli of Manica Diamonds with nine.

Whawha’s Jayden Barake with eight and FC Platinum’s Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya with seven goals complete the top five.

At this scoring rate, it means the 20-goal mark could be out of reach for the 2023 golden boot winner.

However, the past seasons have not been memorable for strikers in the top-flight, with no player managing to surpass Knox Mutizwa’s tally of 14 goals since 2015.

Meanwhile, the going is getting tougher and tougher for former Warriors skipper, Benjani Mwaruwari at Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Having presided over 12 games, Mwaruwari has only won three times, lost as many and drawn the rest.

Madamburo are 14 points away from the league leaders, FC Platinum and are 8th on the log with 30 points.

Elsewhere, FC Platinum dropped points after a goal less draw with Dynamos at the weekend and their lead at the top has since been reduced to three points after second placed Chicken Inn beat Bulawayo Chief 3-1.

Despite being in a tough time, Dynamos remain third with 36 points, while Manica Diamonds are on fourth with 33 points and Black Rhinos fifth on 31 points.

Behind them are Triangle United and Herentals, who are tied on 31 points.

Highlanders dropped from sixth to ninth and are on 30 points followed by Bulawayo Chiefs who are four points behind, while Yadah are 11th with 24 points.

Harare City, Caps United and ZPC Kariba are above the relegation zone with 22 points apiece.

The bottom four comprises Cranborne Bullets with 22, Bulawayo City on 21, Tenax on 20 and Whawha with 18 points.
