The Zimbabwe Handball Federation has set in motion preparations for the Youth Africa Nations Championship slated for Rwanda next month.

At a time there are doubts over hosting the Handball Zone Six championships due to logistical challenges, the Zimbabwe Handball Federation has shifted focus to the Youth Africa Nations Championship slated for Rwanda next month.

As part of the preparations, the local handball mother body will host the Under 18 men and women’s Handball Tournament from the 29th to the 31st of this month at the City Sports Centre in Harare and the Chitungwiza Aquatic complex..

“The tournament for the Under 18 is coming after a long time of inactivity due to the COVID-19 restrictions imposed on Zimbabwe, so this tournament is going to gear up the juniors and it is going to be a platform for selection of the team that will participate in the upcoming youth tournament,” said ZHF Secretary General, Edison Chiroodza.

Handball playing schools and academies have been invited to take part in the tournament which will see players being selected for the Youth Africa Nations Championship which will run from the 28th of August to the 7th of September.

“We are hoping to send the Under 18 team which was preparing for the Zone six championships which was postponed. We are planning to be in camp on the 15th of August to prepare for the competition. We will also host the junior tournament this month with the main purpose being to expose our juniors to a competitive game time,” explained, ZHF Technical Director Farai Gwisai.

With Vision 2026 on course, the Zimbabwe Handball Federation is working on a plan to keep the junior group together for as long as possible in preparation for the Olympic Games.
