THE Chikomba community is hoping to benefit from the new steel plant being established in Manhize, on the confluence of Midlands, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East provinces.

The area is also near Chikomba in Mashonaland East Province and Mhondoro in Mashonaland West Province.

The plant, which will also come with a new town, has generated a lot of excitement in Chikomba as the local community expects to reap the benefits of job creation and availability of social services.

“Life will change for us as employees will boost our businesses,” said a business owner.

“Jobs will be created as there will be more customers. Lives will change in Chivhu,” said a community member.

“Poverty, prostitution and crime will end because most people will be working,” a resident noted, while another said the company will benefit them as they will afford to pay their council bills.

The Manhize Iron and Steel Plant is expected to start operating by next year, producing 1,2 million tonnes of steel in the first phase and employing more than 6 000 people upon completion.
