FC Platinum click into gear

By Lawrence Trusida

DEFENDING champions, FC Platinum made a huge statement of intent after taking over pole position in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League following another fruitful weekend.

The Platinum miners started the season slowly after releasing some of their senior players but they have turned things around in spectacular fashion.

It has been a remarkable turnaround which has seen the Platinum miners going on a six match winning streak in which they have also kept six clean sheets.

Their latest victory was a huge statement of intent after dismantling title rivals Chicken Inn with a three-nil demolition that was rich in both quality and class.

The Zvishavane based side has scored the highest number of goals and also conceded the least in the league.

When Captain Petros Mhari was injured in the match against Herentals, most people felt it was a disaster for FC Platinum but up-stepped Wallace Magalane who has been crying out for opportunities.

At one point, Magalane had to leave the club looking for game time at CAPS United, but Coach Norman Mapeza lured him back on his return to FC Platinum and he has grabbed the opportunity in the best possible way.

In the six games that he has played, Magalane is yet to concede leading the club’s resurgence from the back.

He is not walking alone with the defence well marshalled by veteran centre back Gift Bhelo who is getting better with age.

Upfront, young Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has been a revelation, driving the team alongside the rejuvenated Walter Musona.

At the other end of the log standings, Whawha’s victory over Tenax did not change much as they remain in the bottom of the log with 15 points alongside Bulawayo City whose victory over Manica Diamonds was just academic.
