THE role played by the Second Republic in creating a level playing field for women to rise to the top in all spheres, came under spotlight during the Women in Public Relations and Communication Awards held at a Harare hotel this Friday.

The event which saw 39 women being awarded, was graced by the Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Honourable Kindness Paradza, representing Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, who applauded women for not waiting for men to tilt the tables in their favor, but taking the bull by the horns to ensure women empowerment and dominance is driven by them.

“In business and industry you will agree with me that we now have several female CEOs and that applies in politics where we have females taking up senior leadership roles. This is in sync with the Second Republic’s mantra of leaving noone and no place behind.

“I am excited that you continue with your efforts to propel women forward in leadership roles and encouraging them to push and strive for excellence as the sharing of information is vital for nation building, social cohesion and economic development. It is said that communication is the lifeblood of an organisation and the role that you as communicators play cannot be underestimated,” he said.

The award winning practitioners who were elated about the development, underscored the need for women to continue taking advantage of the conducive environment created by the Second Republic to occupy positions of power.

“We are so humbled to receive recognition as being torch-bearers in a field where there is competion from our male counterparts. Women are becoming movers and shakers in various fields including PR. We want to urge aspiring female PR practitioners to continue pursuing this path bearing in mind that only the sky is the limit. The Second Republic has cone up with several initiatives like NDS1 which have provisions aimed at women emancipation , we should take advantage of that,” said a PR Practitioner.

Some of the PR and Communication heavyweights who received awards are Marjorie Mutemererwa, Victoria Ruzvidzo, Prisca Utete, Elizabeth Mukabeta and Patricia Murambinda.

The awards ceremony were held under the theme Gender Diversity in PR and Communication:Increasing the number of women in leadership roles in Communication.
