Goshawks lose final match

ZIMBABWE concluded their Currie Cup campaign with a defeat after going down 26-16 to Valke in a close match that could have gone either way.

The Goshawks paid the prize for a slow start as they let a first half lead slip after going down in their final match of the South African domestic competition before heading off to Europe for a test match against The Netherlands as well as the World Cup Qualifiers slated for next month.

Valke took an early 12-nil lead before the Goshawks clawed back into the game with a Liam Lakam converted try and two penalties from captain Hilton Mudariki to take a 13-12 lead into the breather.

The script was the same for the second half as the Goshawks started slowly and were duly punished before slotting a penalty that reduced the deficit before Valke punished Zimbabwe at the death.

“A much better performance than the last matches… We just lacked a bit, but I am happy we picked ourselves up after a few bad games and we head to Europe with a positive mindset,” said Mudariki.

The Goshawks will depart for Europe this Monday with 31 players ahead of the qualifiers that start on the first of July.
