THE Zimbabwe netball team, the Gems are set to leave for Malawi this Saturday ahead of the Confederation of Southern Africa Netball Association (COSANA) Cup which gets underway this weekend.

With their green and black outfit, the Gems are bubbling with confidence and looking forward to square off with old foes Malawi and Namibia in a tri-nations cup, which will help shape the team’s confidence ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup qualifiers slated for August.

“We are geared up for the tournament and the camp had a lot of positives and the tournament came at the right time as we are also preparing for the World Cup qualifiers,” said Tendai Shinya, Gems assistant coach.

“Our target is Malawi because it is a very competitive team and it is high time we took their position. They are working very hard, but we believe our team this time will make a difference.”

The COSANA tourney will also feature the Netball Under -19 teams who are preparing for the Africa Union Youth Sports Council Region Five Games set for Malawi at the end of the year.

“It has been a while without much game time, but this tournament is going to help the girls learn from the seniors and prepare for the youth games without pressure,” said under-19 team coach,
Simbarashe Mlambo.

The Gems and the under-19 team will leave for Malawi early Saturday morning as the COSANA cup roars into life on Sunday, with Zimbabwe playing Namibia in their first match.

The COSANA tournament is part of preparations for the 2023 Netball World Cup qualifiers penciled for Cape Town, South Africa in August.
