ZIMBABWEAN junior tennis players have set their eyes on improving their international rankings at the ongoing Cranrid World Junior Tennis tournament in Bulawayo.
“I am happy to be part of those making it to the final week. The competition is stiff, but I think I will make it and improve on my international rankings,” said Lyle Zaloumis, Zimbabwean top seed player.
Zaloumis is the second seed after Ethan Sibanda in the boys category, while Tanya Midzi is the top seed in the girls category, followed by Tadiwa Mauche.
Tournament organiser Cliff Nhokwara said the young boys and girls have an opportunity to improve their rankings with 12 countries represented at the competition.
“So far so good, our local players are giving their best. This is a tournament which is sort of a decider on whether players can pursue the sport or not as it has a bearing on their rankings. It is an individual tournament that determines the player’s ranking,” he said.
The tournament which is only eligible for players between the age of 13 and 18 started on the 21st of May with the curtain coming down on the fourth of June.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s top seed Ethan Sibanda beat South Africa’s Francois van Wyk 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, while another top seed Tanya Midzi got the better of her countryman Hailey Banda 6-1,6-1 in the first round.
