By Anashe Murombedzi

The Zimbabwe national rugby team, the Sables, have stepped up preparations for the Africa Cup which will also serve as the final qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup set for next year.

Zimbabwe will be in Europe for the first time since the late 80s when they face the Netherlands in a friendly international match on the 25th of next month in Amsterdam.

The match is part of preparations for the 2022 Rugby Africa Cup where the Sables have an opportunity to make it to the World Cup for the first time since 1991.

The national team is currently participating as the Goshawks in the Currie Cup First Division in South Africa, where Zimbabwe is getting the necessary game time to fine tune their preparations.

“We are very excited to play the Dutch as the Zimbabwean team is touring in Europe since the late 80s and we are excited to make history. Preparations are going well in the Currie Cup and we have won 3 games so far with 3 games left as we gather momentum and working hard so we can be proud of what we have and everyone is available for the big tournament,” said Jason Maritz, Sables team manager.

The Currie Cup has been the best platform for Zimbabwe to play with the best.

Zimbabwe has won three matches and are seventh out of 10 teams with 12 points in the Currie Cup First Division.

They will face Leopards at False Bay Rugby Club in Cape Town this Saturday.

The 2022 Rugby Africa Cup is set for France in July with Zimbabwe facing Cote d’Ivoire in the quarter-finals.
