BULAWAYO based boxing referee, Steven Masiyambumbi has been awarded a three-gold star and is now ranked among the top four referees in Africa.
The just concluded World Women Championships held in Instabul, Turkey from the 6th to the 21st of this month revealed a yawning gap in promoting female amateur boxers.
Zimbabwe was not represented at the tournament, which featured 96 countries.
There was, however a silver lining with Bulawayo based boxing referee, Steven Masiyambumbi being awarded.
Even in that moment of personal glory Masiyambumbi is looking at the bigger picture.
“We learnt valuable lessons that we need to prioritise the girl child in amateur boxing. The issue is that the majority of our female boxers quickly turn professional so if we can have at least a minimum number that one has to play before graduating or turning professional that can help us,” he said.
Zimbabwe has an opportunity to get things right with four high profile boxing tournaments on the cards next year.
The All Africa Games, Olympic Qualifiers and World Championships are an opportunity for the country to revive female amateur boxing before the big events.
