Young blood in hockey national team

NATIONAL hockey team selectors are blending youth with experience as Zimbabwe prepares for the Central-South Africa Tournament set for St John’s College in Harare in August.

The Zimbabwe national hockey team has been boosted by the infusion of young blood after the retirement of former captain Mary Houghton and Belinda Marais.

Youths have since laid their claim after the country‘s best performance at the Junior World Cup where Zimbabwe finished 12th out of 16 nations.

“It is very good for the development of the team and growth of the sport. We are now looking to the future and we’ll see the value of these juniors as they push for the growth of the team,” said Tendai Maredza, Zimbabwe Under 21 Hockey team coach.

Meanwhile, the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe announced the ladies squad to prepare for the Central South Africa Tournament set for St John’s College from the August 27 to September 4.

The team includes Georgia Allardice, Mercedes Beekes, Hayley Clark, Tinodiwanashe Elijah, Simone Herbst, Jorja Jones, Courtney Lowe, Lavender Mandoza, Tatenda Maswera, Jenna Mathieson, Mazvita Mtausi-Gwaradzimba, Khanyisile Mzizi, Lillian Pope, Gugulethu Sibanda, Kaylee Sithole, Alexei Terbalanche, Natalie, Taya Trivella and Rumbidzai Zimuto.

On the other hand, their male counterparts are preparing for the Africa Nations Cup which will be held at the same venue.

The tournament also serves as the qualifier for the African Games.
