Herentals Queens maintain unbeaten run

By Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

It was another weekend of exciting action in the Women’s Super League with Herentals Queens winning the
clash of the titans after a one-nil victory over Correctional Queens at Chikurubi Training Deport in Harare.

In a match that featured more than six national team players, a goal fest like in other matches was not expected and a solitary strike by Herentals Queens winger Mellanda Rungu in the 65th minute was the decider.

Playing at their home ground and with seasoned players like captain Merjury Nyaumwe, Erina Jeke, Samkeliso Zulu and Manyara Mandaza, Correctional Queens took the initiative early but found the visitors’ backline marshalled by Mighty Warriors goalkeeper, Lindiwe Magwede unyielding.

It was a cagey affair with most of the play confined to the middle of the park as both teams struggled to dominate.

It was only in the second half that Herentals Queens finally broke the deadlock to record their third successive victory of the season.

The win consolidated their position on top with nine points from three matches, with Chapungu Queens in second with six points from two matches.

Correctional Queens’ first defeat of the season means they remain third on the 14 team log with three points.

Chipembere, Mutare City Rovers and MSU Queens are yet to pick up points and lie in the bottom three.

In other results, Black Mambas Queens beat Mutare City Rovers 2-1 at Morris Deport, while Scorpion Queens thumped Chipembere Queens 6-2.

Perennial campaigners, Faithdrive Queens walloped Conduit Academy 7-1, with Maudy Mafuruse scoring a hat-trick, while Shylline Dambamuromo chipped in with a brace.

The last match of the weekend saw Yadah Queens dismissing MSU Queens 3-1.

Meanwhile, defending Super league champions, Black Rhinos Queens play their second match of the campaign this Tuesday when they take on Borrow Jets at 2 Brigade Barracks.

Rhinos missed the start for the season due to COVID-19 related issues within their camp.

The Women’s Super league is back after a three year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical issues.
