ZVISHAVANE District Hospital received a major boost after a local mining firm availed childcare equipment worth more than US$18 thousand, a development expected to improve health care services in the town.
One of the country’s biggest platinum miners, Mimosa mines continues with its community benevolence programme, with Zvishavane District Hospital being the latest to benefit.
The mining company donated two infant incubators and a drug refrigerator worth more than US$18 thousand, a move set to reduce infant mortality at the district referral hospital.
Accepting the donation, the District Medical Officer Dr Tapiwa Mavurayi expressed gratitude towards the kind gesture.
“It will go a long way in assisting us in managing the death of the newly born babies, before we had these challenges but again we thank our all weather friends from mimosa for their kind gesture,” he said.
The company’s General Manager Steven Ndiyamba said the gesture seeks to ensure the health facility is best placed to deal with the challenges of infant mortality.
“We identify the areas of need as per our CSR and we saw it fit to capacitate Zvishavane Hospital, we saw that there were no incubators at the hospital and the infants were dying due to lack of this facility thus we come up with this initiative and hopefully the challenges won’t recur,” he said.
Statistics show that infant mortality rate in Zimbabwe fell gradually from 72.9 deaths per one thousand live births in 1971 to 37.9 deaths per one thousand live births in 2020.
