THE Zimbabwe National Sevens Rugby Team, the Cheetahs are in the final leg of preparations ahead of the Africa Sevens Tournament slated for Kenya this weekend.
The Africa Men’s Sevens Cup will see the top three teams from the 14 team tournament qualifying for the World Cup set for South Africa, after World Rugby announced that they have scrapped the repechage tournament.
The Cheetahs qualified for the last World Cup held in South Africa and will be looking to make it to two consecutive global tournaments.
The team has been holding periodic camps since December last year and the technical department is pleased with the results.
“We are happy with how things have gone on so far, the Sables Sevens and the Zambezi Sevens tournament exposed our weaknesses and we have been working on that and we believe that we will bring the cup home,” said Cheetahs Team Manager, Tafadzwa Mhende.
The Cheetahs have been boosted by the availability of Russia based Shingi Katsvere, who was roped in at the 11th hour, to add experience to the forward line.
Zimbabwe will take on minnows, Burkina Faso in the first match with the winners of that encounter progressing to Pool B where giants Uganda lie in wait.
The top two teams from two pools will progress to the semi-finals.
