SKIPPERS from the two football powerhouses participating in this year’s Independence trophy have rallied football fans to throng Babourfields Stadium for a mouth-watering tie between Highlanders and Dynamos set for Monday.
Business went to a standstill this Sunday as people scrambled to catch a glimpse of the independence flame which was paraded by Highlanders and Dynamos players in Bulawayo’s western suburbs.
A mouth-watering tie is in the offing, but both sets of skippers from the two participating teams believe the twelfth man may spice up the game.
“What is important is that we are celebrating our country’s birthday and we are calling for football fans to come in their numbers for the game to be enjoyable,” said Ariel Sibanda, Bosso captain.
Dembare captain Patson Jaure said, “As players we are in contact, but what is more important is that we are telling each other that after our game are a people united. There are results for every game, but post the game as players we meet and discuss. Let the best team win, but we are not in it to add numbers. We want it.”
The Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Dr Kirsty Coventry believes the two participating teams will give spectators a top notch performance.
“We are excited about the game. I am not supporting any team, but I believe we will see some entertaining football,” said Minister Coventry.
The 42nd independence celebrations will be held at Barbourfields Stadium under the theme “Leaving no one and no place behind.”
