So-called minnows wrestle points from traditional giants

PREMIER Soccer League minnows confirmed that they have what it takes to compete with the best after taking points from the traditional giants at the weekend.

Before the start of match day 11 fixtures, one would be tempted to think the match between log leaders Chicken Inn and then basement club Whawha was a foregone conclusion, but the script was re-written with some corrections too.

The Midlands based club cruised to a three-nil victory over 2015 League Champions Chicken at Ascot Stadium in Gweru to register their second win of the season and move from the bottom of the log.

Whawha’s triumph opened the door for Dynamos to move to the top of the log on goal difference after playing out to a nil-all draw against Ngezi Platinum Stars.

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services side’s exploits seemed to have spurred other minnows, with Cranborne Bullets getting a point away to Highlanders in a match in which they could have won after taking a two-nil lead.

That came after new boys Tenax collected a point on the road following a one-all draw with Harare City.

Unpredictable Herentals picked up their fifth win of the season after edging Triangle one-nil at the National Sports Stadium.

In Mutare, Bulawayo Chiefs forced a nil-all draw against former log leaders, Manica Diamonds.

Meanwhile, Caps United moved to within six points of Log leaders Dynamos after a one-nil victory over Yadah.

DeMbare and second placed Chicken Inn have 23 points each but they are separated by goal difference, while Triangle and Manica Diamonds complete the top four with 20 points apiece.

Defending champions, FC Platinum have slowly clawed to fifth position after a subdued start to the season.

In the bottom half, Bulawayo City now anchor the log after their loss to FC Platinum exchanging places with Wha wha who moved a place up after their win over Chicken Inn.
