DESPITE failing to progress to the Junior World Cup quarter-finals, the Zimbabwe Under-21 women’s hockey team are guaranteed a top 12 finish which will see the national team boosting their rankings.
After finishing third in pool A with one win and two defeats, the Under-21 women’s hockey is now playing for rankings points already guaranteed of a top 12 finish.
This will be the highest ranking to be recorded by Zimbabwe at the Junior World Cup after finishing 16th in their last three appearances at the world Cup.
“The performance has been good at the moment obviously we finished third in our pool our last game was a tough one we knew against Netherlands was going to be tough they are the world champions ahead of us but we take the exposure and experience it was a good fighting spirit from the girls now we focus on the 9th to 12th position which is going to be our best ever finish at junior World Cup so hopefully we can finish higher in the top 10 that will be a great achievement,” said Tendai Maredza, the Under21 coach.
The next match to determine their place in the rankings will be scheduled after all the group stage games are played.
However, Zimbabwe made history after they recorded their first win ever although they failed to proceed to the quarter-finals after losing 18-0 to world champions Netherlands and another heavy defeat by powerhouses United States of America to finish third in pool A with 3 points.
