EGYPT beat African Champions Senegal one-nil in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Cairo last night to take a slight advantage into the return leg on Tuesday.

A fourth-minute own goal by Senegal’s Saliou Ciss was enough to give Egypt a one-nil advantage going into the second leg set for Dakar on Tuesday.

The game which featured Liverpool star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane was a repeat of the Africa Cup of Nations final – won by Senegal on penalties after the match ended nil-all.

Elsewhere, the qualifier between Ghana and Nigeria is delicately poised after the first leg ended a nil-all in Accra.

Algeria inflicted a rare home defeat on Cameroon as the 2019 African champions took a crucial 1-0 lead from the first leg courtesy of an Islam Slimani goal.

Tunisia were gifted a one-nil win in the first leg away to Mali after an own goal by Moussa Sissako.

Morocco scored a crucial away goal against the 10-man Democratic Republic of Congo to earn a one-all draw in Kinshasa in the first leg.

Yoane Wissa gave the DRC the lead before Morocco equalised through Tarik Tissoudali.

Winners of the play-offs will represent Africa at the 2022 World Cup set for Qatar at the end of the year.
