ZIMBABWE Cricket’s initiative to introduce the sport to all corners of the country is set to go a notch higher after a grassroots cricket programme was relaunched in Hopley area of Harare.
The Grassroots Cricket programme produced a number of renowned cricketers including former captains Tatenda Taibu, Elton Chigumbura and Prosper Utseya among others.
While the programme has been dormant for some years, ZC has resuscitated it to build a bigger player base.
This Tuesday, Southlands Academy in Hopley, was a hive of activity as youngsters from different schools tried their luck.
Developmental coaches and Chevrons all-rounder, Ryan Burl took the youngsters through their paces.
“This is a good initiative as we aim to build for tomorrow, and such programmes will secure the future of the game in the country as we are making sure it’s played by as many people as possible in the country,” said Ryan Burl, Chevrons all rounder.
Cricket equipment including bats, pads, gloves, balls and plastic stumps were also donated to the school, which will be a zonal centre for development.
A development coach was also assigned to the region.
