Region creates platform for member countries to trade power

By Owen Mandovha

THE Southern Africa Power Pool is seeking to block any potential energy security threats by creating a market for excess power generated in the region in order to keep the entire region’s lights on.

SAPP Executive Director, Stephen Dihwa made the revelations in an interview with ZBC News on the sidelines of a lecture to senior military officers at the Zimbabwe National Defence University in Mazowe this Tuesday.

“Angola for example produces extra power than it uses, but that power is not transmitted to other countries facing power shortages because it’s not connected to regional grids. What we have done as a pool is to create a trading platform that allows those in a deficit position to buy from those with extra power,” he noted.

Mr Dihwa noted that the regional body is seeking to connect independent power producers to the power pool in the wake of their growing numbers in the region.

“There has been a lot of independent power producers including of renewable energy and these have not been integrated into the pool. So, we are working hard to integrate them – a move that will further achieve the equitable supply of power in the region.”

The South Africa Power Pool was established through the signing of a SADC Inter Governmental Memorandum of Understanding in 1995 to promote regional cooperation in power generation and transmission.
