THE first athletics championship of the year will take centre stage this Saturday at the National Sports Stadium, with young athletes hoping to make the grade for Zimbabwe Olympic Committee scholarship opportunities.
The event which will be hosted by the Harare Athletics Board is an opportunity for Under 14s and 16s to impress the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee which is offering Olympic scholarships as part of their long term development strategy.
Junior athletes are also vying for a chance to impress national team coaches with the under 20 World Youth Championships on the horizon.
The seniors will also be on the reckoning as they start preparing for the Africa Senior Championship and the World Championships set for August this year.
All the country’s top athletes are expected to converge at the National Sports Stadium main arena.
Swimming provincial championships will also take place over the weekend with swimmers from across the country meeting in Bulawayo and Harare as they prepare for the National championships slated for the end of this month.
Basketball action returns to the City Sports Centre for the first time this year as Super Saturday lights up the weekend action with log leaders Foxes battling perennial campaigners Raiderz in the peak of the weekend matches.
Apart from that encounter, it’s a battle of the Universities with UZ Stars up against Bindura University in another potentially exciting encounter.
Rugby enthusiasts will witness the action for the first time this year on Saturday with Under 21 action taking place at Harare Sports Club.
