At least eight people are reported to have been killed while several others were injured in a stampede outside the Paul Biya stadium in Yaounde ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations encounter between hosts Cameroon and Comoros.
The stadium has a capacity of 60 000 but was not meant to be more than 80 percent full due to Covid-19 restrictions.
However, reports say more than 50 000 people tried to attend with the Governor of the central region of Cameroon, Naseri Paul Biya, saying there could be more casualties.
The match went ahead as scheduled with Cameroon scrapping through to the quarter finals following a 2-1 win over depleted Comoros which had an outfield player in goal after a Covid-19 outbreak in their camp.
Meanwhile, Debutants Gambia continued with their fairy tale run at the AFCON after reaching the last eight with a one-nil victory over Guinea.
Round of 16 action continues today with Senegal playing Cape Verde at 6pm before Malawi take on Morocco at 9pm.
