Chevrons face Sri Lanka in one day international decider this Friday

THE Zimbabwe national cricket side, the Chevrons face Sri Lanka in the decider of the three match One Day International Series at Pallekele Cricket Ground in Kandy this Friday.

Having upset the hosts in their own backyard in 2017, the Chevrons go into Friday’s match looking to repeat the feat.

The series is evenly balanced at one-all ahead of the decider and the Chevrons will be buoyed by the return of head coach Lalchand Rajput who oversaw the last training session before the match after missing the first two matches while in Covid-19 isolation.

The coach is pleased with the way his charges have conducted themselves.

“The guys have really played well under pressure this is a difficult place and the boys have acquitted themselves well, this is an important series and we really need to win it,” coach Lalchand Rajput said.

Stand-in captain Craig Ervine reserved special praise for the batsmen.

“We have been struggling a lot in this area, but credit goes to our top order with the way we have batted this series and hope we come good again tomorrow,” he said.

The series is part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Super League which is the pathway to qualify for the 2023 World Cup set for India.

The Chevrons picked up 10 points in their victory against Sri Lanka and if they are successful again this Friday, they will get to 45 points and move into 8th position.

The top eight teams on the 13-team log automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the rest will battle it out for the two remaining slots in a repechage tournament.
