Hockey women’s national team captain Mary Houghton is confident that the positive team spirit will spur their chances of winning when they meet South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations in Accra; Ghana on Monday
Zimbabwe is drawn in pool A with Southern Africa rivals South Africa, Namibia and Uganda while in pool B have the hosts Ghana, Nigeria Kenya and Zambia.
Zimbabwe sent a 19-member women’s delegation which will be led by skipper Mary Houghton under the watchful eye of Coach Patricia Davies.
The Flames captain Mary Houghton is confident they will reach the semi-finals as they are well prepared against South Africa in their first group stage encounter.
“We are feeling confident for our match against South Africa, we are well prepared we have been groomed well by our coaches and our management and we are feeling very excited to take them on and hopefully get a good game and we are not only focusing on that game we need to focus on our next two games after South Africa and hopefully we’ll cone with 2 wins to leads us to semifinals place and reach the final,” she said.
The senior hockey ladies will be up against South Africa in their first group stage encounter on Monday before taking Uganda for the first time on Tuesday.
The continental tournament will run until the 23rd of this month.
