Micro, small and medium enterprises survey underway

ZIMBABWE is set to conclude the national micro, small and medium enterprises survey in the first quarter of the year to determine SMEs contribution to the gross domestic product and set a solid foundation for the attainment of vision 2030.

Zimbabwe’s quest for an upper-middle-income economy by 2030 is expected to be informed by statistics that guide the decision-making process, hence the move by the government to spearhead the crafting of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) Survey.

Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Permanent Secretary Moses Mhike who addressed enumerators for the survey in Mutare this Tuesday, revealed that the process will be completed in the first quarter of the year.

“The last MSMEs survey was done in 2012 by Finscope funded by the World Bank and the plan was to have the surveys every after five years. It is worth noting that this survey was now long overdue as the reflections of the 2012 Survey have become outdated. The reference point for the characterization of the sector was no longer palatable to reflect it in any arena hence the heightened need to conduct this survey.”

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) Acting Director-General Tafadzwa Bandama and Manicaland Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Edgars Seenza spoke on the importance of statistics in advancing the devolution agenda and ascertaining the sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP).

“The survey is very important in ascertaining the contribution of the sector to the GDP, the size of the companies, the number of employees, demographic set up and funding gaps among other issues. The survey helps to produce statistics for the devolution agenda.”

“The survey is critical in analyzing the contribution of the MSMEs sector to the national economy and to find funding and support gaps to support the emerging enterprises for them to continue contributing towards national development.”

The MSMEs survey is being conducted at a time government is promoting the establishment of more enterprises in rural communities to accelerate rural industrialisation and ensure equitable distribution of national income and wealth.
