The Warriors’ opponents in their first match at the Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal are in panic mode after nine members of their delegation tested positive for Covid-19.
The Warriors get their 2021 AFCON campaign this Monday when they go hunting for the Lions of Teranga at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam.
All the Zimbabwean players are now in camp, save for Jordan Zemura who was isolating at his base in England after a Covid-19 outbreak at his club, Bournemouth.
The utility player is expected to join his National Team mates this Saturday after he tested negative, in a move set to boost the morale in the Warriors camp.
However, for their opponents the situation is different with news that nine players and staff in the Senegal squad tested positive for Covid-19.
The affected players are Leicester City midfielder Nampalys Mendy, Metz’s Pape Matar Sarr and Kayserispor forward Mame Thiam, with the rest being members of the technical team.
The news has forced the Teranga Lions to delay their flight to Cameroon as they were scheduled to depart this Wednesday.
The Warriors’ other opponents in Group B, Malawi have also been affected by COVID-19.
The Flames arrived in Cameroon without striker Richard Mbulu, midfielder Charles Petro and Mark Fodya, who all remained in Saudi Arabia, where the team was camped for their pre-tournament training.
The tournament’s health protocols dictate that once a player tests positive they need to retain two negative tests to be allowed to play.
There is more bad news for Malawi after UD Songo forward Schumacher Kuwali was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a muscle injury in training.
All seems to be going well in the Guinea camp who face the Warriors in their last group match.
