The Zimbabwe national men’s football team, the Warriors, have suffered a major blow amid revelations that defender, Teenage Hadebe is a doubt for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament that begins in Cameroon in two weeks’ time.
Days are ticking as the kick off of Africa’s biggest football tournament nears and the Warriors are busy gathering their armour for a hunt in Yaounde.
Rock solid defender, Teenage Hadebe is, However, not part of the 22 players who have reported for camp, with Team Manager, Wellington Mupandare confirming the US based player is a doubt for the tournament.
“The following players have reported for camp Petros Mhari, Talbert Shumba, Taimon Mvula, Martin Mapisa, Peter Muduwa, Alec Mudimu, Takudzwa Chimwemwe, Tapiwa Sibanda, Godknows Murwira, Gerald Takwara, Bruce Kangwa, Onismor Bhasera, Temptation Chiwunga, Kelvin Madzongwe, Bill Antonio Thabani Kamusoko, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Shepherd Mhlanga Ishmael Wadi, Frank Mukarati, Never Tigere, Panashe Matimbanyoka, Knox Mutizwa and Prince Dube. However, Teenage Hadebe who has been in the country for three weeks is still in Bulawayo attending some pressing family issues, it has been dire for him so we don’t know if he will make it or not, we will talk to him sometime in the next two days and find out,” said Mpandare.
Time is cut out for the Warriors technical team to ensure they take the reliable Warriors to Cameroon with departure pencilled for next week Wednesday.
The squad will be trimmed to 28 players before departure.
Five players that will miss the local camp include Tinotenda Kadewere, Captain Knowledge Musona, Jordan Zemura, David Moyo and Admiral Muskwe, and will join their fellow countrymen in Cameroon.
Mupandare also spoke on the training schedule for the Warriors and a friendly match lined up against Sudan
“So in Cameroon, we will have training games, we will have a friendly match against Sudan on the 2nd of January then another training session game will be on the 4th of January and we’re negotiating with a number of teams so all is set for AFCON tournament,” he added.
Meanwhile, Warriors’ AFCON Group B opponents and one of the tournament favourites, Senegal have named their final squad for the biannual showpiece, with Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane and Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy included.
