ManU survive PSG scare after UEFA blunder

By Admire Mhungu

AN afternoon of technicalities saw PSG being drawn to play Manchester United, but after what was termed a material error UEFA ordered a second draw which also proved unkind to the Parisians seeing them drawing Spanish giants Real Madrid.

UEFA had Declared the earlier champions league group of sixteen draw void and rescheduled another draw after what they termed a ‘material error’.

Former Arsenal and Russian goal master Andrey Arshavin who was conducting the draw mistakenly pulled out Manchester United’s name card for the game against Villarreal.

However, Giorgio Marchetti UEFA Deputy General Secretary rectified the mistake as UEFA rules state that Manchester United and Villarreal cannot face each other as they were in the same group during the group stage.

However, in a surprising new twist, UEFA released a circular declaring the earlier draw void because of what they termed a material error.

“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16,” reads the statement issued by UEFA.

The draw which was redone at 1600hrs CAT will now see

PSG vs FC Baryen Munich

Sporting CP vs Manchester City

Benfica vs Ajax

Chelsea vs Lille

Athletico vs Manchester United

Villarreal vs Juventus

InterMillan vs Liverpool

Round of sixteen will be played on 15, 16, 22 and 23 February 2022.
