Weightlifting is mostly renowned as a male dominated field but women seem to be catching up and making a difference.
Audrey Svongwa has proven she is a force to reckon with.
She aimed high at the recent power lifting competition bringing out her prowess in the 2021 African powerlifting and bench press Championships in Potchefstroom South Africa.
The all-time female weightlifter raised the country`s flag high after she scooped gold in the Bench press, Under-76kg female Open category, and silver in the female Open category.
The 36-year-old believes her participation in the African Championships is an opportunity to shine a light on the power lifting sports genre.
“I am hoping that our performance this year in the African championships will bring attention to our sport as it is relatively new, so having to participate at the African champs and managed to beg two medals I’m hoping this will definitely bring sponsors on board and we will be able to take many lifters to future events as we have a big pool of people who are doing power lifting in Zimbabwe,” she said.
Svongwa`s team mate, Maude Mashonganyika did not disappoint as , she won gold in the 69kg female category and best female classic lifter placing Zimbabwe on the continental map of giants.
