THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) is looking ahead to next year with optimism, after laying out a solid plan for local competitions.
The Association’s 2022 sporting calendar will see new domestic competitions being introduced.
Among tournaments lined up for next year are the national cross country, national open championship, and the national junior championships.
The inter club competitions will lead up to the inter provincial championships which will be held in Bulawayo and Harare.
NAAZ President, Tendai Tagara highlighted the significance of the provincial and inter club competitions in talent identification at grass roots level.
“The calendar is fully loaded in terms of activities in provinces which shows that competitions organised in the provinces are for development for our athletes at various levels because, it is not everyone who goes to the national championships. The introduction of the inter club competitions is to strengthen the grass roots level of competition we believe the clubs are the backbone of our sport,” he said.
Meanwhile, the middle- and long-distance coaching courses which were slated for this Friday in Bulawayo have been postponed to January next year following the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
