It was a good day for the country at the ongoing African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth games in Maseru, Lesotho after Team Zimbabwe scooped seven medals.
Going into the regional games, Zimbabwean swimming team led by Olympian Donata Katai was the one to watch and they duly delivered.
The Junior African champion was the first onto the High Altitude Pool to compete in the 50 meter butterfly final and as expected, she was number one out of the pool, securing gold for the country.
Highly rated Paige van de Westhuizen grabbed another gold in the 200m freestyle, while the girls 200m freestyle relay team got the third gold medal.
Four silver medals were secured by the boys’ relay team, two in individual races, with today’s haul taking Zimbabwe’s medals tally at the tournament to eight.
In tennis, Lyle Zaloumis progressed to the second round of the tennis competition after beating Mozambican Ibrahim Cossa 6-3 6-1.
“I struggled a bit with the wind, but for my first match I am happy and I can always build upon this going forward,” Zaloumis enthused.
Julie Tungamirai crashed out of the girls’ singles after losing 6-5 2-6 7-5 to the hosts Tshidi Moseme.
Meanwhile, the athletics team has landed in Maseru ahead of the track and field competitions which get underway on Wednesday.
