THE Zimbabwe women national cricket team, the Lady Chevrons, picked up their first win in the ongoing International Cricket Council Women’s World Cup qualifiers after a one wicket victory over United States at Takashinga Cricket club in Harare this Thursday.
Needing nothing short of victory to stay in contention for a place in the next stage of the qualifiers, the Lady Chevrons won the toss, put the visiting Americans to bat and dismissed themvisitors for a paltry 131 runs in 34 overs.
Loreen Tshuma grabbed three wickets, while Precious Marange chipped in with two as Shane Mayers and Lorryn Phiri grabbed a wicket apiece.
The hosts started comfortably in their chase with Modester Mupachikwa, Sharne Mayers and Josephine Nkomo all getting starts.
With the dismissal of the top three, a trio of zeros followed with Captain Mary-Anne Musonda, Chiedza Dururu and Loreen Tshuma all failing to trouble the scorers.
Eventually a last wicket partnership between Nomvelo Sibanda and Francisca Chipare saw the Lady Chevrons sneaking home.
Although relieved with the win Captain Mary-Anne Musonda conceded it wasn’t pretty.
“It wasnt the best game, so many things went wrong especially the batting, we really need to improve and start taking responsibility, it happened in the first game and now again we need to do better,” she said.
The Lady Chevrons moved up to third place in Group B with two points, two behind joint leaders Bangladesh and Thailand who have played a game more.
In other matches played this Thursday, Thailand beat Bangladesh by 16 runs under the Duckworth Lewis method, while Ireland beat Netherlands by 29 runs.
