The decision to suspend ZIFA was a forgone conclusion.
Most football fans in Mutare have condemned the suspension of ZIFA board ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations as ill-advised and based on emotions which might jeopardise the national team’s participation at the continental football showpiece in January next tear.
While there is general consensus that the board has failed, fans feel the decision could have been taken after the continental campaign.
“We condemn the suspension of ZIFA board towards the AFCON games. We are not against the suspension but the timing is wrong,” a fan said.
Another noted: “The SRC should have waited for the AFCON to be played before suspending the board.”
“The suspension is viewed as interference in sport and might attract the national team’s suspension from the AFCON. This is not good for the country and the game of football,” said another.
Said another: “The SRC made an emotional decision. It knew about the shortcomings a long time ago. It should have reacted some time ago and not now as there is less time before the AFCON games are played.”
Football fans believe any decision made should consider the plight of the players and ultimate impact on the national team’s performance and rankings.
