The senior netball team, the Gems, suffered an embarrassing 47-44 defeat to lowly ranked Botswana at the ongoing Africa Netball Championship in Windhoek, Namibia this afternoon.
They had one of their worst performances as they went down to neighbours Botswana in a match they were largely expected to win based on the rankings and the girls in class between the two sides.
The team started like a house on fire but fizzled out at the end as they looked evidently tired against an inspired Botswana side.
Captain Felisitus Kwangwa, affectionately known as the minister of defence, suffered and injury early in the first quarter and her withdrawal opened the door for the Female Zebras, even though she eventually returned to play with a limp the game was all but done.
Zimbabwe Netball Association president, Leticia Chipandu who is with the team in Windhoek, blamed her team for being complacent.
“This is an embarrassing defeat. We were complacent and we thought we would walk over these girls,” Chipandu lamented.
The Gems now need to regroup as they face Kenya in their last match this Monday.
